Rabia Ashiq

She made it to the Olympics

“Girls should educate themselves and realise their dreams through hard work and persistence. Nothing is impossible.”

rabia-ashiqRabia faced discouragement from her immediate and extended family to participate in sports but her passion drove her to persist. As a student at a CARE adopted government school, she always excelled at sports especially in running. With the support of her teachers, she maintained a rigourous training programme throughout school and qualified for national and international competitions. In 2012, the Olympics Committee selected her as a wild card entry to the 800-meter run and she became one of only two women from Pakistan to participate in the Olympics in 2012. She didn’t make it to the finals but believes that the experience of representing Pakistan at the Olympics as a female athlete was an honour in itself. In total, she has won 52 gold medals and set two national records, and does not plan to stop anytime soon.
